Wednesday on Jazz

17 Mar
2010

I’ve been invited to play alongside bassist Mihai Moldoveanu at Manufactura Handmade Café on March 24th.

The line up is: myself on piano, Dan Alex Mitrofan on guitar, Mihai Moldoveanu on bass and Radu Pieloiu on drums.

We’ll be performing some originals (written by myself, Moldoveanu and Mitrofan) as well as some standards.

A Magical Journey

2010

So I’ve got this very special gig on the 27th at Sakura Café and the theme is ‘Journey through the magical world of Jazz’.

Features Lucian Nagy on saxophones, Dan Alex Mitrofan on guitar, Csaba Santa on double bass and Radu Pieloiu on drums.

Funktional Attitude

10 Mar
2010

I’ve got two gigs lined up with Funktional Attitude along side Ionut Dorobantiu on guitar, Anghel Mailat on bass and Radu Pieloiu (pictured) on drums.

Friday 12th – Sakura Café Timisoara @ 9PM,

Saturday 13th – Manufactura Handmade Café @ 9PM.

I was pleasantly surprised to return home and find a new gigging place: ‘Manufactura Handmade Café’ is the newest addition to Timisoara’s places to go and grab a drink and listen to some live music.

I actually have a gig there on March 5th with Dan Alex Mitrofan on guitar, Csaba Santa on double bass and Radu Pieloiu on drums.

I’ve been invited to perform alongside vocalist Marion Kräutner in a project that can only be described as Timisoara’s newest cover band. ‘Manufactura Handmade Cafe’ in Timisoara on March 8th.

The line-up:
Marion Kräutner – vocals
Ştefi Olariu – trumpet
Luci Naste – guitar
Csabi Sánta – double bass
Sergiu Cătană – drums
Radu Pieloiu – percussion

Special guest: Sebastian Spanache – piano

Until now: The place has been re-everything-ed and, even though it’s still small, it’s now a great venue for live music and, why not, a coffee or Pepsi. No Coke for me there. Damn.

Had a couple of gigs there with Szmuk Project (myself, Theo Groszmuk on doublebass, Dan Mitrofan on guitar, Radu Pieloiu on drums and Sergiu Catana on percussion), and Lucian Nagy Quartet (myself, Lucian Nagy on tenor sax, Csaba santa on doublebass and Radu Pieloiu on drums) and the atmosphere was awesome. It’s intimate, it’s cozy, it’s just great.

I’ve seen a couple great performances such as Dan Mitrofan Trio (with Csaba Santa on doublebass and Sergiu Catana on drums) and Funktional Attitude (with Ionut Dorobantu on guitar, Anghel Mailat on bass and Radu Pieloiu on drums).

Oh, wow. You’d think sound engineers in Romania in 2009 would know how to manage the following instruments on an international Jazz Festival stage: a piano, a Rhodes piano, a guitar amp, one bass amp, one clip-on saxophone mic, drums and a vocal mic. But you’d be wrong.

Constant feedback on the monitors on stage made it so that I couldn’t even hear myself proper. Good thing I was playing on a real piano. I couldn’t hear the bass, I couldn’t hear the Rhodes, I couldn’t hear the sax. I could hear the drums though. Which, at least, kept me in time. On one tune I actually held the feedback with my piano sustain pedal for a good 10 seconds after we finished the song. Nobody bothered to tweak anything, lower any levels etc. Good!

It’s completely disgraceful and unprofessional to have such people handling the sound at a festival like Garana Jazz. But then again, it all comes down to the same kind of business that’s been going on in Romania for years: instead of actually getting professional people to do the job, you get “friends” or acquaintances or people who happen to have the gear but not the know-how. Maybe they can do favors and you wouldn’t have to pay them as much as you’d pay a real sound guy.

It’s too bad actually. I was really looking forward to this gig. It got ruined by the awful sound. As far as people in the crowd told me, they couldn’t quite hear the feedback out in the house, so we’re left in the shitty position of not being able to enjoy the gig because we can’t hear anything, and the people in the crowd are looking at us and thinking we don’t give a damn and we’re mocking the gig, because they can’t hear the stuff that’s going on on stage.

Brilliant, isn’t it? Looking forward for the DVD. It should be amazing.

Jazz de Necaz band at Garana International Jazz Festival 2009. We’ll be opening the festival on July 17th at 7PM.

Band: Lucian Nagy (saxophones, EWI), Dan Alex “Bozo” Mitrofan (guitar), Sebastian Spanache (piano, synths), Victor Miclaus (bass), Tavi Scurtu (drums) and Maria Chioran (vocals).

I’ve rearranged some tunes to play with this group. ‘Bizarre Mode’ and ‘Thoughts of Steel’ I’ve also recorded with the trio (audio coming soon) and I wrote a cheesy bossa-nova called ‘On a Tuesday Night’. We’re also playing a couple of tunes Dan “Bozo” Mitrofan wrote: ‘Nou Funk’ and ‘Kind of Sketch’. It’s going to be fun.

I’m a big fan of Mr. Chick Corea, and I especially love “Spain”. And who doesn’t, it’s a great tune. And since every single piano player plays this tune, here’s my take on it:

Sebastian Spanache – Spain

Right click > Save/Download. Features an electric piano / synth solo and a small drum interlude.

Update: I thought I’d give this a proper finish. So the tune actually has an ending now.

Enjoy!
